Another Slave Narrative

Event
Information

Between 1936-1938, the Federal Writers’ Project interviewed more than 2,300 African-Americans, who were previously enslaved in the United States of America through 1865 when the Civil War ended, in order to officially document “slave live.”

Directed by Michelle Renee Jackson, MDiv, a descendant of enslaved African-Americans, the award-winning film, “Another Slave Narrative” transforms how viewers relate to the history of slavery by featuring a multiracial cast to relay the dialogue of six everyday, formerly-enslaved African-Americans interviewed by the Federal Writers’ Project between 1936-1938.

Bio

Michelle Renee Jackson, MDiv

Michelle is the founder and principal artist of Simuel + Murray, a production company that produces compelling portrait photography, film, and videography.

Michelle is an award-winning writer, director, and portrait photographer. Her journey as an artist began during her graduate program at Harvard Divinity School where she studied the intersections of religion, race, gender, and sexuality. On the weekends, she moonlit as a slam poet.

In 2010, while serving as the Tanenbaum Interreligious Fellow for Vassar College, Michelle completed her first screeningwriting course, taught by Jim Steerman. Since then Michelle has received national attention for her film, “Another Slave Narrative (ASN),” which makes it easier for educators nationwide to discuss the history of slavery with their students.

She is a native of Southern California and the youngest of three amazing daughters. Her parents, Valli and Solomon, have both retired from their careers in social worker and military service (respectively).

She is a national keynote speaker whose topics frequently include using the unique experience of African-Americans as a source of inspiration for courageous action for all. Her work is endorsed by scholars nationwide, including at Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and Yale.

In 2022, she and her partner purchased a small farm in Pine Plains, NY where she has learned to enjoy driving their tractor while also enjoying the quiet, the owls, the racoons, the deer, the bear, the bats, the foxes, the cayotes, the stars in the clear skies, the bees, the corn fields, and fresh raw milk from Chaseholm Farm on any given day.
