Wynton Marsalis Comes to Pine Plains
to Launch The Stissing Center

Pine Plains, NY:  World renowned musician Wynton Marsalis will be heading to Pine Plains on Saturday, September 7th to headline the inaugural Benefit Concert for The Stissing Center, formerly the Pine Plains Memorial Hall.

A performance by Wynton Marsalis is an illustrious start for The Stissing Center. “We have been preparing for this moment for years,” said Executive Director Brian Keeler, “and to be sharing our first concert with such a world class talent as Wynton Marsalis is as good as it gets.”

Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer and bandleader, an educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He has created and performed an expansive range of music from quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras, and tap dance to ballet, expanding the vocabulary for jazz and classical music with a vital body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers.

Always swinging, Marsalis blows his trumpet with a clear tone, a depth of emotion and a unique, virtuosic style derived from an encyclopedic range of trumpet techniques. When you hear Marsalis play, you’re hearing life being played out through music.

In 2019, Wynton’s appearances have included Brisbane, Seoul, Tokyo, New York City, and, come September, Pine Plains, New York.

The Benefit Concert will generate money for The Stissing Center’s operational expenses and help fund the continued renovation of the 103-year-old building. The Stissing Center plans to host an annual benefit concert.

Mr. Marsalis’ appearance at the benefit concert will also launch the 2019 Construction Concert Series. The series will include numerous free and low-cost events and will run throughout the fall.

“We are calling it our ‘Construction Concert Series’ because the renovations are not quite finished, so each event will be unique,” Keeler said. “There will be something for everyone at The Stissing Center.”

The line-up for the Fall 2019 Construction Concert Series includes:

  • August 31 – Free “Surprise Party”: a door-opening celebration with food, fun, and dancing. All are welcome!
  • September 7 – Premiere Benefit Concert event with Wynton Marsalis and his quartet
  • September 21 – Free screening of “Phantom of the Opera”: the silent film classic with a live theatre organ performance of the original score
  • October 5 – Bard Conservatory of Music Concert – Percussion and Brass ensembles are scheduled
  • October 18 – Molsky’s Mountain Drifters – “It is no exaggeration to say that Bruce Molsky is one of the greatest American fiddlers of all time. His playing is mesmerizing and transporting, and best experienced live” – WBUR (Boston NPR)
