Sarah Hanahan is an up-and-coming jazz saxophonist in New York City currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Jazz Performance at The Juilliard School. In 2015, Sarah was awarded a full scholarship to study jazz performance at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz within the Hartt School of Music (University of Hartford). Her college professors include well-known jazz saxophone performers Javon Jackson and Abraham Burton.
Recently, Sarah has been working with many renowned musicians including Dee Dee Bridgewater with the DDB Big Band at the Detroit Jazz Festival, Ulysses Owens Jr. and Generation Y, The Mingus Big Band, Sherrie Miracle and the Diva Orchestra, Emmet Cohen, Barry Stephenson, and Jason Moran. Sarah has been playing in venues around NYC including Smalls Jazz Club, the Harlem Jazz Museum, Times Square with a series curated by Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Django, and Central Park as part of the Keyed Up and Giant Step Arts series. She also recently had the opportunity to play with the Alto Summit curated by Jazz at Lincoln Center at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival.
Sarah is considered a “Young Lion” on the alto saxophone, combining influences of Jackie McLean, John Coltrane, Kenny Garrett and Charlie Parker. Sarah has a unique pen when it comes to composition. Her songs are very melodic and singable, yet complex and fun to play. During her sets, she also likes to play a couple of notable jazz standards, as those are some of the greatest compositions ever written. Sarah always brings new and unique arrangements, making any tune sound like her own.
